After CCTV installation, seeing pictures on a screen is only the beginning. A structured review helps confirm that coverage, recording, playback and access work as agreed.
Check coverage against its purpose
Compare camera positions with the plan and test agreed entrances, storage areas and other locations. Review day and night images, backlighting, reflections and obstructions. If identifying particular details is a requirement, test it under real conditions.
Test recording and playback
Check date and time, recording schedules, storage and the agreed retention period. Find, play and export footage from every camera. Actual retention depends on resolution, movement and recording settings, so monitor it after launch.
Review access and security
- Use separate accounts with appropriate permissions.
- Change default credentials and store them securely.
- Test agreed remote access without exposing the recorder directly to the internet.
- Check agreed alerts, such as camera disconnection or full storage.
Test likely failures
Simulate loss of external connectivity and verify local recording if included in the design. Review power and UPS arrangements where applicable, then check recovery and alerts. Document results and outstanding issues before final acceptance.
What should you receive?
Request the device inventory and locations, wiring diagram, warranty information, operating guide, retention and export policy, and maintenance and support plan. Consider privacy and applicable rules when deciding where to record and who can access footage.
